From Travis County Democrats chair Jan Soifer:
I am delighted to announce that this morning, two of our very own Travis County Democrats, Sarah Goodfriend and Suzanne Bryant, have become the first same-gender couple to be legally married in the State of Texas! As a long-time friend of Sarah’s and Suzanne’s, I applaud and congratulate them on this very happy occasion!
After being a couple for over 30 years, they will finally enjoy the legal rights that my husband and I have enjoyed for over 30 years, and that the Texas GOP has worked vigorously to deny them and countless others throughout our state.
You may know Sarah as the tireless advocate and President of Stonewall Democrats of Austin, as a dedicated volunteer working for the election of many great Democrats, as a member of State Rep. Celia Israel’s team, or as a strong fighter in her ongoing battle with cancer. You may know Suzanne as a founding board member and Co-Chair of the National LGBT Bar Association or as an adoption attorney who has secured second-parent adoptions for hundreds of LGBT Texans in the last twenty years. Now the nation will know Sarah and Suzanne as heroes in the struggle for marriage equality.
This morning, after a hearing in which Sarah and Suzanne sought a Temporary Restraining Order to allow them to obtain a marriage license and get married today, State District Judge David Wahlberg signed a court order directing County Clerk Dana DeBeauvior to issue a marriage license, which she did after consultation with her attorney, County Attorney David Escamilla. The marriage ceremony, in the presence of Sarah and Suzanne’s daughters, Dawn and Ting, happened shortly thereafter outside the Travis County Clerk’s office, with Rabbi Kerry Baker officiating.
We are incredibly fortunate to live in Travis County where we have so many wonderful Democratic elected officials who value the constitutional rights of all Texans and in turn worked to make Sarah and Suzanne’s Texas marriage this morning a reality.
Please join us in congratulating Sarah, Suzanne, and their daughters Dawn and Ting, on this joyous and historic occasion, and in saying thank you to our Democratic elected officials for making this happen by signing and sharing our online card!
